Namji Dolls

“A barren woman is like a leaking pot”

African proverb

In Africa, dolls function not only as toys but as powerful talismans to help a woman conceive. In a culture where great value is placed on bearing children, dolls are made by  male priests and strapped across a woman's stomach in the hope that she would become pregnant.

We work closely with our dolls carvers in Cameroon to ensure that the pieces are aesthetically pleasing while still retaining their traditional shape and adornments. The art of doll carving is taught by father to son in villages across Cameroon.  Each doll is carved by hand and can take anywhere from 2 days to a week to complete. All of our dolls are mounted on perspex stands
